The hike is a must do!Īllow time for a slice of cake and a visit to the glass blower shop as there are many beautiful pieces to admire. There are sturdy wooden bridges crossing the creek at times along the walk that provide nice views as you go deeper into the forest. The hike can be challenging at times due to the rocky path yet smooths out once you make it to the top of the waterfall. The sun shone brightly on the trees at the top of the mountain while it became dark and misty at ground level as the day advanced into late afternoon. The trees are quite tall and the mixture of pine with leaves changing into their fall colors was spectacular. The hike into the forest under the bridge was magical. The village had a beautiful view of the railroad stone bridge in the foreground of the mountains covered in trees. Hofgut Sternen is about midway through the Black Forest. After we left the city the drive became quite beautiful as we descended into the mountains. We could see the Black Forest Mountains to the east on the horizon during the trip and drove through a very nice city called Freiburg. The drive from our ship to Hofgut Sternen was quite nice. We both enjoyed a piece of Black Forest Cake before departing from the area for our ship. My wife watched a demonstration of baking a Black Forest cake and glass blowing while I went on a short hike of the Black Forest. There were a variety of activities to entertain us both at the village. My wife and I visited Hofgut Sternen on a bus tour of the Black Forest sponsored by the the Viking Cruise Line. Almost all of us on the tour wished it had only been one night. I dont know why Gate 1 Tours chooses to spend 2 nights here. If you are not part of a tour group I don’t know why you would stay here. Charged $2.50 euro for a small carafe of tap water even though we all ordered full dinners.Food was ok. Since this hotel is in the middle of no where we were forced to eat in their dining room the second night after returning from a day of touring. We had a group dinner with fixed menu as part of our tour package. The shower head was one of those hand held things that tend to get water everywhere. The bathroom was very old school with a combination bath tub/ shower that was very slippery. The room was large with windows that opened. Elevators do not require a key to operate so anyone could be in the darkened hallways. I don’t see how this system is very safe. Our room was at the very end off by itself making it creepy to walk the hallway. This is a smart hotel and hall lights only come on as you enter the hallway. Others in our group were in a building across the way. There are a few buildings on the property. The hotel seems to cater to large tour bus groups.
